News of Land of Karchan

W elcome to the Land of Karchan MUD, a land filled with mystery and enchantment, where weapons, magic, intelligence, and common sense play key roles in the realm. Where love and war can be one and the same. Where elves coexist peacefully with the humans, and make war with the dwarves. Where the sun rises, and the moon falls. Where one can change into a hero with a single swipe of his sword.

Anyone who plays a werewolf, werecat, or some kind of were-creature that involves transforming from one form to another - please let me know. I have something super cool for you. To the Calenwood Pack and Pack Faolan, don't bother contacting me. I already got you down.

Oh, I forgot a couple of details about the RETRO WEEK titles. Please put text in after the title saying something to the affect of "Celebrating Retro Week" or "This is for Retro Week." Just something that lets me know that is an old title - cause it may not be immediately apparent in some cases. Also, that way people in guilds do not get confused when they see your title isn't current. You can post up your pictures even if you don't think you'll win for having the oldest! And if you DO think you'll win for having the oldest, shoot me a mudmail with an approximate date for your title. Thanks.

This week is RETRO WEEK! What does that mean? It means you go and find the oldest possible title picture for your chracter that you can dreg up, and use it all this week! There will be a prize for the oldest picture.

There is also a contest for who can come up with the best event. For example, you know how those birds chip at the road? That is an event. So look around the land and think of what sort of things you can imagine happening. Send me a mudmail with your suggestions. The winner's suggestion will be implemented. w00t.

Howdy, Karchanians!

For the next few weeks I'll be doing the special movement 'flap'. That is to say, all characters with wings like a bat or bird or the like that can fly by flapping their wings. If this applies to your character all the time, mudmail me so we can get you the special movement appropriate. TO those who grow wings, change shapes, cast spells, whathaveyou, this does NOT apply, your day is coming soon. I promise. :)
As well, I'd like to formally open the guild 'beta' to any player that wishes to make a character as a beta-tester. The guild itself is nothing special, but to remain in it you need to help us Deps out by finding us the types of pictures we need for the game, descriptions we're short of, testing out of experimental commands, and any other number of tedious but important odds and ends needed to make things even cooler than they are. (thus why a new alt, so your char doesn't accidentally fry or something). The knowledge you gain by testing new commands is, as with any other, OOC, and while you're welcome to go through the RPs to use successfully added commands... You know. :)
One last note, so many people have used these things over the years I've added them in, in a 'first draft' format. You may now run or crawl in any direction (run north), and the readouts are different, accordingly. As soon as I can finish the tiring system you WILL get tired by running far, but your stamina for cross-country travel will increase through usage. The only benefit of this, really, is that your character is appearing in the matter he/she should be, instead of needing a me command to let others know you've crawled up for whatever reason. Enjoy, and constructive feedback is always welcome!

Aloo again!

Gonna do this for one last week, just in case there's a few folks that've been gone!
I want to know how it was you found the Land of Karchan, and what it is that keeps you playing. Is it the writing?
By my most recent tally the methods of arrival and number of people to have used each are as follows;
  • 24 people found the game by a referral from another.
  • 7 people found the game by weblink while surfing. As it is my firm belief that only 32 people play the game, those of you that haven't yet mudmailed me have ample opportunity now to prove me wrong. :) If you've already mailed me, you're already tallied, so don't curb the numbers!

I lied...the bazaar is not quite fully operational yet. Not sure why. Maybe BLACKFYRE will help me fix it. He's smart like that you know.

    Wednesday, July 9, 03:31

I made a bazaar! You can buy things there! It's like two east of the eastern gate then north. If things are constantly sold out, let me know. I dun have it restocking often right now, once a month, but I can change that if there is an actual need. Sham El Istan Sudar has been RPing that there has been a bazaar outside of Pendulis along that path for awhile so I finally decided to make it real. Enjoy.

    Howdy!

We Deps still don't know how the game crashed, I'm afraid, I'm sure the Bossman will update us at his earliest convenience. Praise Karn that it's back!
Returning to my poll from the preceding weeks, adjusted for recent reports back, the new tally of people's method of finding Karchan is as follows!
  • 22 people found the game by a referral.
  • 7 people found the game by varied weblinks.
So, if you haven't yet mailed me, drop me a line to tell how you found this game and what keeps you playing it, so we can find more people like you! :)

    Howdy people!

Still interested in the method by which you've managed to find the Land of Karchan! Adding to that, is it the writing that keeps you? Send me a mudmail and we can find more like us!
    I've received loads of info already, and just counting those who have replied this first week (and the ones I already know) here is what I've tallied;
  • 15 found Karchan by referral from an Online or Real Life friend.
  • 4 found Karchan by weblinks.
I must say I expected more categories! The info at this point leans toward the idea that word-of-mouth has brought us the most players, so tell more folks about it! Make flyers, put them in comic shops, "Free Online Interactive Fantasy-Fiction RPG" "Free Online Interactive Fantasy-Fiction Writing Simm", or, well, you get the idea.
To the other three, like myself, out there that found the game by accident, I don't know what to say. We should get outside more often? :)

    Players of Karchan!

For a number of really good reasons, I'd like to know how it was that you discovered the Land of Karchan? I myself barely recall following a series of links from one fantasy RPG related personal geocities page to the next until I found myself here by way of a link on the personal page of Ryoko, a former long-time player, a decade ago.
When we know how the people that stay here, got here, then we can use that to get more, more more! Simply mudmail me your method of discovery, if you remember it (and are interested in bring more people to The Land). :)

    Tuesday, June 3, 08:27

Attention: On the issue of Knights using the arrest command. Yes, Knights CAN use the arrest command for ANY reason that they see fit - with or without accompanying rp. If we, as the deps, did not want them to have this power, well... they wouldn't have that power. The people who play Knights are respected rp'ers (respected, at least, by the deps) who we trust will use the powers we've given them properly. If you think that a Knight is unjustified in arresting your character because your character is too uber cool to ever get bested by a Knight, then think again! The Knights ARE the uberest, most skilled warriors in the land (as well as some of the best rp'ers). If you feel like your arrest was unjustified because the rp did not make sense or the Knight simply didn't try, the only thing you can do is appeal to a dep. Most likely the dep will tell you to take a hike. This game is largely dependent on cooperation between players regarding what one person can do to another person through rp - hence auto-hits are frowned upon. But there are SOME things that do not require consultation, and being arrested is one of them. There are a TON of reasons the Knights have the powers they do (ever notice none of the evil guilds have auto-arrests? There's a reason for that), and I would be more than happy to elaborate further to anyone who wants to communicate privately about it. Point is, if you get arrested, suck it up. If you're a wanted criminal and don't want to get arrested, I suggest staying away from the road and not openly taunting or attacking Knights! In other words, show them the respect they have earned. That's how it is.

    Alrighty peoples,

There seems to be a bit of a glitch in the game. No idea what happened, but yeah. It seems that emoting in certain formats allows you to do said command to anyone in the game if they are on. As long as you are using an adjective. So if I am at the castle and you are at the road you can do something like 'think carefully to Midevia' and I will see it. It seems to only do this for the format of 'command adjective to name' not 'command name adjective'. At least not yet. I have no idea when exactly this broke it was probably fairly recently. So, I am telling you now just because it is doing this does not mean you should abuse it. Might be funny. Seem harmless. But I wouldn't use the command that way until it gets fixed personally. So don't until you hear otherwise. Thank you.

Hey all. I'm working on a few projects and stuff, and I'll need some volunteers to help me with things. Let me know if you are interested. I am making a town to the north of the Grove of Nature, accessible by travelling up the north road that will start at the waterfall and hug the river up that way. I need the help of anyone fluent in Norwegian, Swedish, or Finnish to help me with place names. It won't be anything even really as complicated as full sentences; I just want to make sure I come up with reasonable adaptations for the name of the town (Lakeshore), possibly the names of the streets, and possibly shop names, and maybe even bot names. For anyone who wants to give me input on the new town, the basic idea is this: It is a fishing community that sits on the southern shore of a large lake. It is at the mouth of the river that eventually empties into that huge waterfall up at the Grove. That is the basic geography of it. There will be shops - hopefully new shops that are not repeats of things we already have. That is the basic premise, so let me know any ideas you might have. Thanks!

As pointed out by my fellow Deputy a few 'breakthroughs' in former programming 'blocks' have been made, and because of this a great number of things never before possible can now be made reality. So, let's start simple!

Just a message to say in the past few weeks/month I have had a few messages from people to say that someone has said something about them ooc thats not nice. Remember that this is a game for everyone, everyone has different styles so embrace it! Games are meant to be fun. If you genuinely have a problem with someone I would suggest thinking about it for a few minutes and then tell them tactfully perhaps in a tell or over aim/msn how you believe their rping could be improved. Like Mya is never serious and I'm sure that winds some people up but I dont do it to offend people I do it cause I have fun rping Mya like that and it makes me want to play the game.

By player request I have added the ability to get into the hospital without crossing The Mound. When standing in the Grove of Nature simply type hospital and you may skip right past The Mound and thusly avoid any complications. When The Mound in no longer considered battleground, I will remove the command.

As many citzens of Karchan have declared the site known as The Mound to be the battleground in the growing war, it should be advised that entering that room will be considered an In-Game Agreement to partake in the proceedings and an acceptance of any consequences that may resultingly befall your character.

Just a reminder from your friendly neighborhood deputies: Rape RPs are not allowed. This is a game for people of all ages and backgrounds. Consider the fact that, at least in the US, one in three women are raped in their lifetime. Starting RPs like that may very well inadvertently make this game a significantly less safe place for people here who are not looking to relive events like that.

    Hello, People of Karchan

As we all know the server has not been entirely stable these past months. It required a dayly reboot because of crashes.

Rumour has it that there was a problem with the memory (recently discovered) which caused all these very odd occurrences. The memory has been replaced, and I hope the world will remain stable for a long time.

It has come to my notice that several players are under the impression that Blackfyre is a Deputy of Karn. He is not. He was in years since past, but has not been for a number of years. If he does regain his deputy status at some point in the future, the public will be duly notified. And since he is not a deputy, he cannot do room descriptions, character descriptions, items, or anything else that a deputy can do. The following is a list of the current deputies: Argo, Cedri, Crissy, Desdamona, Ephinie, Kesair, and Mya.

My bad, I forgot, right now almost none of the guilds have been set up, and also don't just apply. This is helpful for people that have gotten into the guilds already. Some John Doe shouldn't type guildapply mif if he hasn't tested with the MIF and been accepted.

    Argo

    Friday, December 30, 00:35

Alright, the guilds are back up. We're still tweaking things, but we can start the rebuilding process. If you are currently a leader of a guild, contact myself or one of the other deputies and give them your guild details. I'm talking official guilds here people. Examples would be the MIF, Knights, etc. Now, to get into a guild once we set it up, you type, "guildapply [the name of the guild]" so, to get into the mif, one would type "guildapply mif". Once you have done that, both you and the guild leader need to be in the game. The guild master can then either accept or reject a person by typing "guildaccept player" or "guildreject player". There are more features to the guild, some just for the guildmasters and some for the members. Type "help guilds" to find out more.

    Friday, November 4, 08:49

    Hello, people of Karchan

Important: This relates to the passwords again. Right now, when you logon to the game, your password will be converted automatically from the old format to the new format. This will, if all is good, not effect you, but it is important that you log on as each of your characters at least once.

This code is temporary and will be removed in a couple of months, meaning that in a couple of months all the old users that use the old format of the password cannot log on. They will have to request a password reset from me or the deputies.

    Implemented some more stuff:

    • money is displayed in your inventory
    • shopkeeper can buy things (Karcas is the only shopkeeper right now)
    • shopkeeper can sell things
    • shopkeeper complains and will not buy items that are worthless (i.e. do not cost money)
    • you can ask the shopkeeper how much an item is worth using the show command. For more info check help show.
    • it is also possible now to give money to another character
    Regards,

    Karn

    Monday, October 31, 09:20

    Hello, everyone

Sorry about the mess with the passwords. It should be okay now.

Any new characters that were created during the mess with the passwords are inaccessible now. If you need to log in using one of the new characters, ask me or one of the deps to change the password.

I added some functionality (which was basically the cause of the problem) regarding money. Currently implemented:

    • money is displayed in your inventory
    • shopkeeper can buy things (Karcas is the only shopkeeper right now)
    • shopkeeper can sell things
    To be implemented:
    • ask shopkeeper what is for sale
    • ask shopkeeper what the value of an item you are carrying is
    • give money to someone else
    • drop money on the floor
    • pick money up from the floor
    • put money in bags
    • get money from bags

    Hello, people.

Sorry to say there was a power outage on Friday at the data center. It was fixed the same Friday, but our little server failed to boot properly when power was restored.

I managed to fix it this morning.

    Hey,

My quest is open. Sorry it took so long to work the bugs out. There might even be a few small bugs left crawling around, but nothing that will interfere with the quest. Now, know before you start that the first half of the quest involves finding items and rooms and what not, and the second half of the quest involves RP. There is no like, prize that I am going to hand any one winner, you get the prize through the IC RP at the end. That is all, have fun with it. The beginning of the quest is somewhere across the bridge over snake river. That is the only hint you are getting, and don't ask any other deps. They won't help you.

Well, the transfer to the new server seems to have been relatively painless. Someone mentioned that new data is missing. This might be true. I\'ve used a backup of the database, made on 2005-07-31. So that was last Sunday.

If anyone has serious problems regarding this let me know.

Also, the deputy email addresses do not work at the moment.

    Hey

I am attempting to set up a quest thingy, and I was wondering about the grand prize of it all. Would you the people rather have A) A full set of enchanted armor that heals you, and is unbreakable, which in turn would give you an advantage in duels or what not, B) A robe that allows you to transport throughout Karchan, C) An uber powerful weapon, or D) Something else. If something else, mail me at Argo@karchan.org and tell me what you would want instead. No promises here, by the by.

There's a new area. If you go to the grove of nature, then over the bridge that way, past the white castle and down to the field with the stairs in it. There is now a winter wonderland type place there. Let me know what you think, explore a little.

    Howdie, People

It is possible that the game might be unreachable for about an hour today. They're doing some work on the core switch or something.

Some things that are, presumably, working:

    • pounce command
    • goose command
    • yawn command
    • bots are talking again
Also, I've included a new scripting language that makes it easy to create customized commands, similar to the old commands created by the deputies. If anyone would like to have some of the old commands ported, specify which command(s) by Filling Out A Bug Report.

    Friday, September 17, 13:53

    Howdie, People.

Some notes on Internet Explorer (and webbrowsers in general). When playing the game, cookies are set that enable you to fill out a charactersheet as well as add links to the link page and add bug reports. Several people reported that this does not work.

However, when starting a new webbrowser, these cookies are not present in the new webbrowser.

So, for instance with Internet Explorer, when opening an additional webpage in a new window (like links or charactersheets), please open a new window by clicking in the menu of your current Internet Explorer window and selecting File->New->Window instead of starting Internet Explorer a second time. This should fix the problem.

Pfew! One of my longest posts ever. I'll put it also in the FAQ.

I added a more dynamic links page on the main website.

This linkpage makes it possible for you (if you have a character on Karchan) to add links to related websites. For example if you wish to add a personal homepage regarding Karchan or add a homepage of a guild of which you are the guildmaster.

I suggest you check it out!

Great! Just great! Well, here comes some of the crap I've had to deal with:

    • my home cable internet connection is gone (they have shut me off because I was sending bad ips onto the network. I managed to trace the problem to a bad netmask, but they still have to reconnect me. What is it for way of working to first shut a persons connection down, and provide information only when I call. Sheesh, the calls alone are a disaster. Helpdesk reconnects me to the Technical Support. Technical Support reconnects me to the Misuse Department. Still isn't fixed, will have to call Tuesday.) Thank god I have Internet at work.
    • my hosting company had an issue with their UPS, causing a reboot of several machines (not only mine). Seems to have been fixed and I restarted the mud server.
    • I'll see what I can do about the who list.
Oh, and by the by, thank you for all the emails mentioning that Karchan was down. It shows that people are still playing the game.

Well, the initial problem was a little one. The disk partition was full. After deleting some files I restarted the server and suddenly nothing worked.

Well, I have no idea what is wrong, but after some god-awful hack I got things working for now. I have to get this program redone in Java and rather right now, before the whole thing comes crashing down. Anyone care to help?

In how far would you people mind if I get a preliminary version done in Java that works flawlessly, but most of the functionality will be gone? Or would you rather have the current situation, a shitty server program that restarts itself every 30 minutes but has items and whatnot.

    Friday, December 27, 14:51

I don't know if any of you noticed but the game seems to become less and less responsive when more and more people are active. This is due to the fact that the server is single-threaded. (i.e. it executes a command sent by a user and then proceeds to the next)

I have recently made the mud multi-threaded. Every command to be executed is handled by a different thread. So, several threads (i.e. commands) can be handled in parallel which should increase the responsiveness of the game wonderfully.

However, this stuff is ofcourse still in beta so I have to do some stuff with it to find out if all is well.

On a side note, I only got a cdrom and manual with my cable internet because the repair-guy is supposed to bring all the necessary equipment I need with him. I am just waiting for a phonecall so I can make an appointment. Do you think he will call before the end of the year?

Anyway, to everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

    All righty then.

The Game now has a Land of Karchan - Main Soundtrack. The full mp3 version is available here, but a small wav version of the first thirty seconds is available here. Ofcourse, the mp3 has much better quality.

Where did I get this? At my place of work I know a person who calls himself Redheat, who makes Synthesizer music. He was kind enough to license two of his tracks to me for free distribution on my karchan.org website. You can find his website at http://www.red-heat.com. He has more scrumptious music to be downloaded there.

Bear in mind that I have licensed his music so I am allowed to distribute these two tracks through my website. If you wish to use these sound tracks as well, you will have to contact him yourself.

I hope you all like the music.

Seeing as important and possibly security sensitive information has been removed from the source code and put into a nice config file, I don't see why I cannot provide people (read) access to the CVS Repository. The CVS Repository is the place where I work (and the deps, when they feel like it) on the source code. As such it always carries the latest and greatest changes. How this works can be found at www.cvshome.org .

Here is the info for you to access my source code through CVS:

    • username: anonymous
    • password: no password, just don't fill out anything
    • proper commandline: cvs -d :pserver:anonymous@www.karchan.org:/karchan/mud/cvsroot <command>
    • (You are ofcourse free to use another program to access my sourcecode. I hear WinCVS and TurtleCVS are quite nice Windows GUIs)
For example getting the latest documentation:
    cvs -d :pserver:anonymous@www.karchan.org:/karchan/mud/cvsroot login
    cvs -d :pserver:anonymous@www.karchan.org:/karchan/mud/cvsroot checkout docs

Some more good news: the mudmail seems to be fixed. I caught the bug and at the same time (as I was bored, anyway) I added some, I think, nice features to the mudmail system.

Some good news: I think I have most of the bugs that were causing freezes and the white-screen-of-death. The game should be running more stable now. *crosses fingers*

One of the little changes that you might have noticed is the extra little piece of text at the top of your screen. It contains the Version Number and last Compile Date/Time stamp of the new mud engine.

Sometimes the game will freeze up. This means that I screwed up and one of the commands used is the cause. What happens is that I fix it immediately and restart the game server. However, between the game freezing up and me resetting the game the game is unavailable.
