Weekly maintenance ended

Wweekly maintenance ended. Snapshot made.

Weekly maintenance started

Weekly maintenance started.

Weekly Maintenance

As I mentioned previously the automated snapshots are now turned off.

I plan to institute a weekly maintenance window, to among other things run a manual snapshot.

The weekly maintenance will run on Wednesdays, from 09:00 until 10:00 CET, which is when most gamers here are fast asleep (I hope).

Bear in mind that during those hours the game might not be as responsive or might even be down.

Karchan crashing at night

I have received word that the game would crash or become unresponsive at night, between the hours of 23:00 EST and 02:00 EST.

The time seems to be fairly constant, which was a big help in getting the problem diagnosed.

The service provider I use takes daily snapshots of my server (backups for those who've never heard of snapshots.) They happen to take these snapshots around 05:00 CET every day. After some timezone translation, they seemed to match up.

I have requested that they move the automated snapshot job to another timeslot, but they unfortunately told me that this cannot be done.

So now I have asked to have the automatic snapshots disabled entirely, and this seems to have fixed the problem.

Of course, not having these snapshots is not ideal. I shall mention in a later blogpost today what I plan to do about it.

High regards as always.

Filesystem files corrupted

It never rains, but it pours as they say. After installing new software packages, and starting up the services, the game seemed to be doing quite well.

Unfortunately, Linux detected errors in the filesystem and decided to switch to read-only mode until I manually ran an fsck.

I did that and the errors have been fixed. I don't think any of the filesystem errors were in the game files, but I have no way to make sure. (I do always make backups prior to upgrading software packages or implementing database changes, Relax)

Once again let me know if anything is out of whack immediately.

Server went down

Server went down an hour or two ago. I have no idea what the problem was, but I took the liberty of installing upgrades to all software packages, making backups of the database, and restarting all the services.

Karchan should be back.

Let me know if anything is out of whack.

Photobucket Issues

As some of you have noticed, some photobucket images are not working, especially banners and some rooms. This is because Photobucket is no longer hosting third party images.

I decided to write a blog post about it, as it is more lasting than a public board message.

What this means is, images from Photobucket will not work any longer. It also means that if I (or anyone else) have made you a banner, it may give you an image saying that I need to upgrade.

Please know that I am working on uploading all banners elsewhere. I ask for your patience as I do this. If I am slow, please feel free to send me a MUDmail or email requesting your banner links. I'm trying to go by who is most active first, but I fully intend to give everyone their banners back in a timely fashion. :)

Thanks for reading!

New Settings Page

Most of you should by now be familiar with the fact that there is a new settings page. I have a good feeling about the current way I have set it up, in that for me it seems easy to add functionality quickly.

Today I released a new version. Bear in mind that your browser will aggressively cache a lot of the old settings page. You might need to jump through a few hoops to get the new version displayed.

The new version contains the following items.

That’s right, people, mud mail is back!!

A lot of the functionality here speaks for itself, but some things are not “obvious”.

The app will show only the first page of most recent mud mails. This is convenient, as it is usually the page that is of most interest. If you wish to see older mud mails, you can use the “Next” button. When you are at the last page, and you press ”Next”, the app will retrieve the next 20 mudmails.

You can send a mudmail to multiple people, just by using a comma-separated list in the “To” field.

You can also fill out “deputies” in the “To” field. I think it is fairly obvious what that does.

Send me a mudmail (to Karn) to show that it works! I cannot guarantee a reply, but I will try. I can add more information to this here Blog Post, if required.

There are three states that this tab can be in:

  • you are not a member of a guild, and a message will mention this.
  • you are a guild member, and can therefore view all information about the guild
  • you are a guildmaster, and can therefore view and edit almost all information about the guild

Bugs and Errors

I have been implementing all the functionality rather quickly, and I opted for getting it out there for you to try out as soon as possible. I have not tested everything and I have not written automated tests yet. There are some bugs that I know of, and probably plenty of bugs that are completely new to me. But it seems to be working fairly well, which is why I decided to release the current version.

If for some reason the page shows outdated/wrong information, you could try switching tab. Reopening the tab will retrieve all information from the server again.

If there is a problem communicating with the server, it will display a red error message at the bottom of the page.

If you do find bugs, please report them by raising a GitHub Issue with as much information as you can (preferably with examples).

Thank you for your time and I hope you enjoy the new stuff.

Sorry, people.

orry, people.

I decided to upgrade all the software packages, and I must have screwed it up somewhere. The machine went down and didn't come back up.

I had to restore a backup of yesterday. (we didn't lose much.)

I did manage to upgrade all the software packages now, though, so that's done.

High regards,

Encrypted Passwords

Passwords are now encrypted using an SHA-512 hash, this is much more secure than the SHA-1 I used to use. (This only is regarding the game, not the wiki accounts.)

Also, a conversion was in place (it means that if you logged on in the game, your password would be converted.) for a couple of months now.

This means people can log on with their usual password, and not notice anything.

A problem might occur for people who have not played the game in several months, as their password was not converted.

Deputies can assist now in password resets.

High regards,
