Metagaming

Definition as Applies to Karchan

Metagaming in roleplay happens when a player uses knowledge they have outside the game to influence their character's actions, even though the character wouldn't realistically know that information. For example, if a player learns in real life about an enemy's secret plan and has their character react to it without any in-game reason, that's metagaming. It breaks the fairness and immersion of the roleplay because the character should only act based on what they've experienced or learned during the game.

Metagaming can lead to frustration among other players, as it gives unfair advantages and disrupts the story. To avoid it, players should keep in-character knowledge separate from out-of-character knowledge. Staying true to the character's perspective, abilities, and experiences helps create a more authentic and enjoyable roleplay for everyone involved.

Exceptions to this Rule:

The 7 of The Chamber of Oracles:
if needed to guide and progress a roleplay, can metagame in a manner that contributes to progressing the plot. This is a specific function meant primarily to record what is happening in the game, but can be used to jar loose something that is stuck. This does not apply to students of Algol, who should at all times remain in character no matter what.

Notable Psychics (still to be played fairly).
If unsure if your character counts, please reach out to the Deputy Team as a whole.
Do not assume that your character counts automatically.

Notable Witches (still to be played fairly).
If unsure if your character counts, please reach out to the Deputy Team as a whole.
Do not assume that your character counts automatically.

Deities (Within Reason). Deity characters are given more leeway for obvious reasons. They should still be polite about what they know about a situation or person so as not to skew the power balance too much.

Divinities (Within Reason). These operate on the same level as notable psychics or witches.

Punishments

Those found to be metagaming will be on the receiving end of either two punishments:
Frogging - You have to execute a certain amount of ribbits before your character is capable of doing anything else in game.
Jackassing - Same thing with heehaws, but funnier.
Depending on the severity of the offense will determine how many times you are required to type ribbit or heehaw.

We hope that these changes as well as a clear definition of what metagaming is will make the game more enjoyable over all.
