Mote

Motes are, in essence, the physical embodiment of magic or, in some cases, elements of earth (i.e., salt). They come in many different shapes and sizes, but only possess attributes that are related to what they are. At any given time, it is believed that there can only be one mote of each "element" of magic.

At the time of their "birth", motes are able to determine their physical appearance. Some might choose to appear humans, some elves, and others might even choose the appearance of an animal. Upon choosing their form, the mote is tied to that body for the entirety of their existence. Of course, their bodies are not perfect creations of their chosen form and will harbor attributes of what they are. For instance, a mote of the sun or moon will have skin that glows golden and silver respectively. A mote of salt will appear grainy and, upon licking, taste like salt.

It is rumored that the beginning of a mote's life immediately follows the death of the mote before it. Upon death, a mote's essence will be released to the world and gather once more elsewhere, and there it will become a new creature, void of the memories of its past life.

Because a mote is the embodiment of what they are, blood does not pump through their veins as it would a normal living creature. In fact, if a mote is cut or wounded, their "essence" begins to slip out of them. For a salt or earth mote, their "blood" would be granules of salt or dirt. For a solar or lunar mote, their "blood" would be either gold or silver. A solar mote's essence would bear healing properties for the living and for creatures of the night, likely inflict pain or induce lethargy. For a lunar mote, the results are the opposite, with their silver blood providing healing properties to vampires and were-creatures while simultaneously providing an anesthetic for the living. Depending on what type of mote, their blood may be more powerful or useful, varying between them all.

Motes are able to reproduce in accordance to the form that they take on at "birth." The children of motes are not motes; however, children born by a mote will have magical inclinations related to that of which their mote parent is. Children of a solar mote are prone to becoming healers while those of a lunar mote are more apt to take up the mantle of a position where lethargy and numbness might come in handy, such as surgery.

Motes can also always tell when someone nearby is a mote, meaning they cannot hide who they are from one another.

Motes are hunted by the Surrans, a military group from the land of Surra that actively seek to imprison and use mote's magical blood for their own purposes. It has caused a lot of grief and suffering to motes.
