Land of Karchan

Obsidian

Obsidian was the son of a mysterious sea nymph and the God Zomann, though for many many years this was a well-kept secret and he walked and learned as a man. His life was filled with conflict, and hard lessons on how this land works and the weaknesses inherent in all things. It was perhaps his life more than his heritage that stoked within him a deep hunger for power and control for their own sake, and especially to the detriment of others. This led him to a life of constant combat and a steady rise in influence and power amongst men until one day he began to strive for more. It is unknown what led him upon the path, though rumors of Zahnos' influence were widespread if nonsensical, but he came to seek to usurp the Throne of Evil.

Zahnos was apparently destroyed in the end by his former follower and though it was revealed that Zahnos may in fact have been his true father, and the possible bastard son Obsidian then claimed his title and his Throne. This was a bold move that brought him the ire of The Thauranko that had been battling over the throne for years. With his newly attained status and power he began a campaign to subjugate the Land of Karchan, starting with the siege of New Pendulis.

It was Dagorii that came to Obsidian, aiding the hero Torko in rousting the new Deity and his servants from the sieged city of New Pendulis by calling the once mortal being out. There was a great combat, and as the dwarf Torko at first held back Obsidian's forces then joined them in watching the battle of beings, Obsidian was seen to apparently be slain by Dagorii and to rise again. Obsidian was seen to slay the Thauranko Dagorii a number of times, but was himself destroyed five times over for each small victory. When Obsidian finally began to tire, his grasp of his new powers not fully realized, Dagorii laughed and spoke thusly; "You are no God of Evil, you are no Thauranko. You are but a clever slug, a spoiled and hungry child. You are but a God of Greed."

Obsidian then made a pact with Dagorii, submitting his will to that of the Thaurankos Kulanin and Osnodon as well. These beings had long existed, and he followed them as much for their knowledge as for his own plans to survive and conquer. Through the guidance of the Thauranko Obsidian came to destroy and consume the power of many Lesser Deities and Immortals, growing in strength with each and destroying the creations of the children of Karn until he had earned their respect and enough might to claim The Throne of Evil. In a ceremony held in the True Dark Castle of Kraal, beyond farthest dark reaches of where mortals can tread, Obsidian was crowned and became the new God of Evil.

This King of evil deities caused great pain and turmoil in The Land for years, some of his more noteworthy heinous deeds and schemes follow.

  • He caused the adopted daughter of torko to be kidnapped, taking her very soul. To save her, torko offered Obsidian his own soul, and so it was that the Double Eternal, Thane and retired Knight came to lose his soul and fall into the command of Evil. Under Obsidian's command torko attacked the Knights, eventually falling to Sypher's axe.
  • Having captured many women and children in addition to soldiers during the Battle of Ammer, Obsidian delighted in torturing these prisoners to death, or ordering such tortures from his minions. He accepted a Pact with Blackfyre, to exchange all of the women and children for the location of an artifact of great power that He seeks even now. Blackfyre used his magics to temporarily transform the men and soldiers, including the Thane Thaeloc and Ammerville's then Captain Rodolphus, to their adolescent forms. The Baron was able to return the surviving prisoners to Ammer but not to uphold his end of the Pact, though it is unlikely he would have if he could. Accordingly, unable to call upon his power against Obsidian, Hestia brought the mage to his own doom of torture unto death.

The evil champion Nightshade, a former vassal of the God, broke Obsidian in a duel, stealing some of Zahnos' power and taking it as his own. Obsidian then donated a great portion of his his power to his daughter Hestia, elevating her to the Goddess of Greed, ensuring the remains of the power of the of true God of Evil were split into multiple places, meaning for no single Deity to be powerful enough to be recognized as the personification of Evil as Zhanos once was. He has since vanished from The Land, but it is believed by none that he is gone for good.
